Today's Bible reading: Genesis 10; Matthew 10.
Today was busy for me with travel, and though we were able to read our passages, I only have a few minutes to write a bit.
Genesis 10. Sometimes the writers of the Bible seem preoccupied with names and genealogies. That is a reminder to us that what they are writing is history. Not only does the Bible contain a hymnbook, as in the Psalms, but it is also contains archives of people groups, tribes, and lineages. It is also a way to track God's progress in preparing humanity for his Son to come into the world. He would be descended from Noah, and Shem, then Abraham, and Israel, then Judah, and David, and so on.
Matthew 10. Jesus appoints and sends out the Twelve on a short-term mission. They were not to always expect a good reception. The gospel divides people. But for those who receive, what a wonderful promise...
"Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward." (10:40-42)
By receiving Christ you and I share in his reward. We are made co-heirs with him!
