Persecution report

"I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and he will hear me. In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted." (Psalm 77:1-2 ESV)

Twice a month men of the church join together to pray for the persecuted church. Here are the prayer concerns that were printed for this week, as compiled by one of our pastor/elders:

Nigeria, Aug 7. Fulani herdsmen continue brazen killing of Christians, slaying 17 since July 17, including women and babies. Over 50,000 believers have been martyred, and millions displaces since the violence began.

Pakistan, Aug 1. Nabeel Masih, a Christian man, 25 yrs old, detained in 2016 in Pakistan (at 16) for "blasphemy" against Islam, has died after years of suffering, imprisonment, and medical neglect.

DR Congo, July 31. A horrific massacre unfolded Sunday in eastern Congo where Islamic State-affiliated jihadists beheaded at least 49 Christians-nine of them children-during a church service in the village of Komanda.

Sudan, July 25. Civilians backed by Sudanese security forces destroyed the compound of the Pentecostal Church in East Nile, one of Khartoum's largest suburbs. The government says they are removing "unregulated" buildings throughout the state.

Columbia, July 24. Seven bodies of Evangelical Christians and a relative to one of the victims were found on July 1 in a mass shallow grave in Guaviare. They had been involved in offering humanitarian aid in the area and murdered by members of the FARC, a rebel group.

Jakarta, Indonesia, July 18. Christians in Indonesia's West Java province are reeling from mob attacks carried out by Muslim hardliners seeking to prevent church services and halt the construction of places of worship.

China, July 3. Three leaders of a prominent house church in China's Shanxi Province have been sentenced to prison on baseless fraud charges, highlighting ongoing persecution of unregistered Christian groups under the Chinese Communist Party.

Indonesia, June 27. A mob of 200 Muslim residents disrupt a Christian retreat, destroying property and terrorizing the participants.

Syria, June 22. A suicide bomber from the Islamic State jihadist group attacked a church in Damascus, killing 20 with 52 people others wounded.

Nicaragua, June 19. Nicaragua's prison system has become a living nightmare for Christian political prisoners and anyone who dares speak out against the Sandinista National Liberation Front.

Cuba, June 23. The communist regime in Cuba is reportedly seeking a ten-year prison sentence for Alexander Verdecia, a 51-year-old Christian dissident and member of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), over Facebook posts critical of the government.

United States, June 22. Family Research Council states, anti-Christian hostility has sharply risen in recent years. Between 2018 and 2023, the FRC documented at least 915 acts of hostility against U.S. churches.

Central Asia, June 10. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan - have a mix of ex-Soviet authoritarianism and Islamic nationalism that can be troublesome and even dangerous to Christians. Protestants are viewed as a national threat.

North Korea, June 10. Seventy North Korean Christians have disappeared with little or no trace from North Korea's brutal, torturous prisons are now told in a new report. Their story is now being told.

Ethiopia, June 13. Police are still searching Thursday for a suspect in the killing of a Christian evangelist, who was murdered for sharing the Good News of the Gospel.

clement quotes hebrews

Clement of Rome wrote to the church in Corinth around AD 90.  This is perhaps the same Clement, companion of Paul, mentioned in Philippians 4:3.  Many hold him to be the first bishop / pope in Rome, aka St. Clement I.   Clement quotes from the letter to the Hebrews.  Origin suggested that Clement was in fact the writer (as transcriber or amanuensis) of Hebrews.  Perhaps this letter began as a "word of exhortation" given by Paul at the synagogue (Heb 13:22; cf Acts 13:15) which then became a circular letter for the churches.  Other possible authors of Hebrews include Luke, Barnabas, or Apollos.  The theology is Pauline, but the transcriber is obviously second-generation (Heb. 2:3-4). At any rate, this early church leader in Rome, is already quoting Hebrews in his letter in AD 90:    CHAPTER 36  ALL BLESSINGS ARE GIVEN TO US THROUGH CHRIST This is the way, beloved, in which we find our Savior, even Jesus Christ,  the High Prie...

Howard Hendricks on OT books chronology

When I was in seminary, Howard Hendricks (aka "Prof") gave us a little card with the books of the OT chronologically arranged. The scanned copy I have was a bit blurry and I wanted to make something like this available for our church class in OT theology ("Story of Redemption"). A few minor edits and here it is...

sword and trowel

"From that day on, half of my servants worked on construction, and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah, who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me." (Nehemiah 4:16-18 ESV) The great London preacher, Charles Spurgeon, published a monthly magazine called The Sword and The Trowel; A record of combat with sin and of labour for the Lord. It was published from 1865 to 1892. The cover of the journal had a drawing taken from Nehemiah 4, which included both a trowel (representing the work) and a sword (representing the fight). The sword was necessary to protect what the men with trowels were building. These citizen-soldier-builders would successfully complete the wall aroun...
